will our battery hens ever lay eggs?

my mom bought some chickens from a pet shop we brang them home only to discover that 2 of the 4 chickens had half of their beaks cut off thats when my dad told mom that she had accidently bought old chickens and they will never lay eggs ws\ feel a bit wronged that the pet shop man told us that they were young when they were not. but i ws wondering if it is true that the chickens egg laying is only stunted and in a few months will they start laying more eggs only 1 of the 4 lay 1 egg a day
 
I don't think so most place that have chick on a large scale trick the chickens. Chickens will lay one or two eggs per day. So they trick them unto believing that morning has come gone therefore getting more eggs per day. They have them in big barn lights on for 8 hours off for 8 hours and back on again a never ending cycle
