will sim work in a new t-mobile phone?

So my bf had a cellphone from t-mobile that one day he dropped it in water and the phone got really screwed over. He is now using an old phone he had from t-mobile but he really hates it. I want to buy him a new one online like on ebay, but If i buy a brand new cellphone on ebay will it work when he puts his sim in it?

(by the way the cellphone will be from the same T-mobile company, i just thought it be cheaper for me to buy it somewere else then in the actual t-mobile store)

If the new mobile is unlocked one means the t mobile sim will work with it.If the new mobile is locked to any particular network means you should unlock it to use t mobile network by getting the service from any online vendor like UnBBlock.com .After unlocked your mobile you can use it .
