Probably not but..................

Zdeno Chara recieved an instigator penalty at the end of the Bruins loss to the Sabres last night. The NHL will not uphold the suspension that comes with it.

Will this stop people from whining about how Malkin should have been suspended last year during the playoffs for the same thing and the NHL rescinded it?

As I said then, that was the right call because it was not the spirit of the rule......Chara was probably closer to being suspended just because it was the very end and he "could" be viewed as an enforcer of sorts.

I believe Carcillo did get suspended for instigating in the last 5 minutes of the game during the playoffs last year.....THAT is who the rule is intended for!
Spaceboy- No.....the official boxscore says 20:00.

LITY- There were times where the rule was not enforced even prior to Malkin. The first time the NHL was unsure was not long after the rule came into effect and Shane Doan recieved an instigator....he had been known to mix it up so they debated it and decided not to suspend him.
The rule was put in to stop the last 5 minutes of games from lasting an hour....and from coaches putting out all their goons to go out and stir things up and prolonging the game.
If you are not a goon and the incident is a result of the flow and passion of the game then you won't likely be suspended. Seems fair to me.
Not sure why people want to debate whether there was a fraction of a second left or not- the rule is apllicable for the last 5 minutes of a game!
LITY- Actually it does say the suspension is automatic...in fact that is exactly how it is worded.

47.22 Fines and Suspensions – Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time (or Anytime in Overtime) - A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at anytime in overtime, shall automatically be suspended for one game. The Director of Hockey Operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc.
LITY- It is what they have it as on NHL.com

Isn't the 19:58 or 20:00 mark discussion irrelevant? Doesn't the instigator suspension rule apply in the last 5 mins.

Right call as he was reacting to the slash. I guess it should be called the instigating without provocation rule.

Believe the review found Chara was reacting to being slashed.
Nothing will stop the the whining.
