Will updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 allow me to make calls/text/use 3G ?

Im an iPhone 4 user in australia. I understand that i need to have iTunes 10.5 beta installed onto my Macbook Pro. As i have read on forums and whatnot, there are some issues that people are unable to connect to a service provider after upgrading to iOS 5? Im not sure whether to go ahead and have my UDID activated and update my iPhone 4. All answers are greatly appreciated!
