windows vista gateway laptop help?

Hi everyone, so my gateway laptop is acting up. I tried restarting it once and I left it for about 5 minutes to let it do its job, and I came back only to see that it failed to restart completely because it froze. Since I could come up with zero ways to reboot it "safely," I held the power button until the computer shut down, waited for 2-3 minutes, then turned it back on. However, seeing as I've done this same procedure whenever I had this "freezing" problem 3-4 times on this laptop, I didn't think anything could go wrong, but as the laptop started to turn on, it took me to the windows error recovery window. It gave me two options: launch startup repair, start windows normally. On my first trial, I selected the start windows normally and let it do its job. I was watching TV, and so waiting wasn't really a hassle, until I noticed that the "moving bar" thing has been moving and loading for over 30 minutes. This was new to me, because before it would start windows normally. I pressed the power button again, and it took me to the same windows error recovery screen. On my second trial, I chose the launch startup repair, and it started checking for disk errors, COOL. The screen also indicated that it may take one hour to complete etc., but as I was watching TV and glanced at the monitor, I realized that it went back to the "moving bar" loading thing, so I thought that it was fixed seeing as I didn't really see the transition between the checking for disk errors screen and the moving bar screen. I, yet again, thought everything was fixed up until realizing that one hour has passed since the moving bar was moving. That was when I realized there is a problem, and I don't know how to fix it. I misplaced my recovery disk, but I am working on borrowing a friends. In the meantime, can anyone provide me with some assistance?

Please and thank you in advance...!!
