Wireless Tether App for android help?

My Wireless Tether app for my HTC Aria only gives off 1kbps, I can connect to the signal with my ipod and my computer but anytime I try to go to a website to see if it was just the app acting strange I dont get anything, is there anyway to get a stronger signal

Im on AT&T network
