Wood chopping gizmo broken; replacement ideas?

I have a little gizmo for chopping wood; it has a square base and a square tube at a 90 degree angle from the base - on this tube you mount a sliding wedge. You raise the wedge, put the log under it then hit the wedge and it splits the wood. Unfortunately the wedge has broken and re-welding it doesn't work; it keeps breaking. I cannot find such a tool anywhere, on eBay or elsewhere. the only other option seems to be renting a hydrolic splitter from home Depot, which seems overkill for my small job (plus $75/day); any ideas on where to get a replacement?
 
Go to your local welding supply and get a few 309 stainless rods. Clean up the broken welds and put the wedge and the piece you will be welding in the oven@ 425 or use a torch to heat it up. Weld it up. The reason it breaks is you are welding high carbon steel, the 309 stainless will help with bonding as well as the pre heat.
Note, if you mess up a cutting torch will not cut through the welded area.
