worried about introducing my new puppy to my dog? advice?

i have a 2 year old female shih tzu called Missy. she's a really friendly dog and is lovely to everyone she meets and normally fine with other dogs too but there has been the odd one she's had a growl at but thats all.
i'm getting a chihuahua puppy on sunday and i'm wondering on how i should prepare Missy for him coming (is it a good idea that the chihuahua's male and my shih tzu's female? is it good that they're two different genders?).
i'm worried incase Missy trys to become the dominate one and doesnt like having him in her home?
any advice and tips? thank you!
 
its better if they are different genders, don't leave the puppy and missy alone to begin with, she may try to show him who is boss of the house, let them meet, move him from her and take him back to her, you should just make sure that missy is still loved and is still getting the attention she has always gotten... she should be fine, i introduce new dogs to my dog all the time as i do dog boarding, she should be fine... good luck
 
Your 2 year old is going to be the alpha and she should be fed first, petted first etc. The new puppy needs to learn that Missy is the top dog. Once both dogs understand this they will start getting along better. When it comes to playing with dog toys, Missy should get first pick. If they fight over a toy take the toy away for a couple of days. I have two dogs and started buying two of every toy I get. One of my dogs started hording toys so all the toys were taken away for the rest of the day and given back the next morning.

I have two female dogs. A Dachshund/Papillon named Daisy and a Chihuahua/Jack Russel named Lily. They get along great. I also have two male cats that love to play with the dogs.
 
I introduced my cats to my boyfriends dog with one being in a bathroom and the other outside the bathroom. They payed under the door after a couple of days of switching them out, so they could pick up on one anthers' scent!
Hope that helps. I also found treats at petsmart that help with anxieties, it helped our dog deal with meeting his new brothers!

Well, ask your breeder (or wherever you're getting the puppy) if you can bring Missy with you so they can meet on a neutral territory. If Missy seems ok with him, maybe hold them together in the car on the way home (but only if somebody else is driving). Do you crate train? Make sure that they have seperate crates. Also, to make sure MIssy isn't territorial of her food, try feeding them together at first, but if she gets upset then you need to feed them seperately. Also let them play together if they are getting along well, but be sure to break up any fights- especially if Missy is being mean to your new pup. The pup is going to naturally want to bite her a little bit because he's still a puppy, but hopefully having another dog will help teach your puppy bite inhibition. That's very important for a dog to know- and you should know by now after having Missy! Good luck, hope it all works out!
 
Have them meet slowly and make sure that they have separate dog bowls set away from each other. Hope this helps!
 
How many pets do you need? If your older dog has growled at another dog then do you really think you need to care for another life? Are you able to? What happens if your dog doesnt get along with the puppy? You going to resell the puppy? Or your shitzu? Ask yourself these before you actually get the puppy. AND introduce your dog to the puppy BEFORE you buy the puppy, do it in a nuetral place so they dont have a territory problem. Once you do that and they know eachother RE-INTRODUCE them again at your house to make sure it is still okay with your Shitzu.

As far as gender goes you can mix and match any EXCEPT two females is not the best combo. I'm learning that the hard way right now haha.
When you introduce them do it in a neutral space such as a park or something for an hour or so and see how they do together. If you introduce them in your house the female will get territorial and there could be issues.
Make sure you give the female lots of praise for good behavior such as wagging tail sniffing and playing. If she growls give her a slight tug on the leash and tell her no. But I'm sure it'll be just fine. Good luck!
