Wasn't Abraham Lincoln the great fighter for a more centralized government? Didn't he promote liberal ideas such as freedom for slaves, and blacks within the political system? Why is it that todays republicans spit on the very ideals of their greatest president?

Abraham Lincoln was not part of the mainstream Republican Party and in fact the party was a work in progress. Had Abraham Lincoln not been assassinated he would have faced impeachment charges within a year of the end of the War.
