Writers, how much does instinct play a role in your writing?

At first I didn't even know there was an unconscious level helping me out in writing.

But It would seem that as i'm writing a chapter, with my loose outline and all in mind, little things would pop up to my head. And these little things would somehow fill in the tiny cracks that I didn't even know existed. Like, those little "ohhhh." ties that most novels have. Those teensy details and connections that invisibly cement the story. I found they've made themselves happen in my writing.

Also, I feel "instincts" play in if I write an idea that doesn't or will not work. Sometimes its a small scene, just something I threw in that I thought would lead the story in a good direction. But as I write, I might keep thinking back to the scene. I could be chapters beyond it, and it could be a well-written and exciting scene, but something will keep telling me 'you need to change this.' and then I give up and check it out to realize that 'oh, no this wouldn't work here.'

Sometimes its just little things, too, that nudges at me. Such as, "she should be wearing a hat in this scene", or "Shaun shouldn't come in yet." and it's not like I know what's going to happen beyond what i'm writing all the time..but idk, it's like there's a little person in my head who can see the further road in front of me and gives me direction.

Haha, so does this happen to any other writers? I'm curious.
