Xbox 360 won't play DivX videos when im not hooked up to xbox live?

My cousin's xbox 360 will play videos with the DivX format when he is connected to xbox live but not when he is disconnected. He has the optional media update but it just isn't working. When i do the same thing offline it works fine. does anyone know what the problem could be?
 
im having same issues online i can watch the movies from my usb devce , offline cant watch nothing
