Xtians: which is it, please...?

When atheists ask about why God didn't avert some horrendous event, we're told that "it's all part of God's plan". When atheists then ask what plan could God have that requires such incredible cruelty and suffering, we're told that "it's not for us to know God's plan".

So if we're not to know God's plan, how can you say with any confidence at all that the events in question actually ARE part of God's plan?
