It's only weird if you don't keep in touch on a regular basis and you ask him out of the blue. That would be awkward!

No i dont think so. Dont be surprised if he's not able to be mature about it and actually do it though. I once asked a guy that had dated and who has still kind of into me for one of his friends numbers because I wanted to ask him something, strictly platonicly, and he gave me a fake number.
