your rights?

after being divorced now 8 yrs i have not been able acess my children nor have i seen them since then. due to the fact i was in a bad relationship my ex husband threatened to kill them if i came within 100 feet of them. Fearing for the safety of my children and knowing how how violent he is , i backed off. then the other day i rang my ex inlaw. i gave them an ultimatium. either they allow me to see my son who has down syndrome the easy way or we can go to court and fight out for the guradianship. as it waspointed out that that my daughter has taken on the role as full time carer for him and that due to the lack of me being there and taking the responsible of him. due to the circumstances at the time and lack of police support i left i my children in his care as asked by my other son. he said he would rather have a mother alive than not having a mother at all, now my question is have jeopardized their safety. i fear he might now carry out his threat.
