fair enough. i get it. i've turned people off by my rhetoric. and you know, i probably deserve that. and i get what you're saying mitlov. i'm really not disagreeing with most people here. and i have repeated myself because, no, i don't think people are getting what i'm saying, or they're being purposefully obtuse about it.

sorry, that i got excited and went all caps-lock.

but the thing that really still bothers me is that people are either flat-out misrepresenting or making up things that i've said. mitlov, you're doing it again: i never said i thought zimmerman was guilty of 2nd degree murder; i said he's guilty of racism (technically not a crime), and culpable in that boys death--huge difference. and we can disagree on why, and i'm fine with that. but please don't just make things up about what i've said. this is now three times you've literally made-up things i've said to attack me with.

Also interesting to note, Section 876.14 of the Florida Crime Statutes states "Wearing mask, hood, or other device on property of another.—No person or persons over 16 years of age shall, while wearing a mask, hood, or device whereby any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed, or covered as to conceal the identity of the wearer, demand entrance or admission or enter or come upon or into the premises, enclosure, or house of any other person in any municipality or county of this state." If this is still a commonly known thing, then that could be a contributing factor as well as to why Zimmerman thought Martin was suspicious. Sure it was raining out, and the most likely reason he had his hood up was because of it, but it is interesting to consider.

and also to the point about the pattern in the calls. so i quickly went through each call and tallied where he specifically mentioned a person. so here's what i came up with. tehcnically, i'm at work so i just flew through this, and i'm sure it's somewhat off. so if anyone would like to verify, that would be great.

46 total calls
18 calls mentions people, the other calls are garage open, or potholes, or cars blocking the road, stuff like that.

of those 18 calls
8 no race (male, female, or none given)
7 black
1 white
1 hispanic
1 child

7 out of 18, for 38%. you can make the case either way. and those 7 are in the previous year before the incident.

There is such a thing as some people WANTING there to be race involved. Some cannot just accept the fact that all of us crackers aren't racist.

I've never met someone who is so angry about a jury verdict as to go all-caps on people but actually agrees that the verdict was correct. Don't you see that even if you never explicitly said "I disagree with the verdict," the anger you've unleashed on everyone who spoke in defense of the verdict implied that as clear as day?

Oh I think he had reasons. They just happened to be wrong.
What I think this shows is that it's a bad idea to have normal people with guns acting all "cop".

did martin attempt to enter someone's residence while wearing a hood? or come upon someone's home? in the 911 call, he was just walking around and "staring" according to zimmerman. he didn't specifically say he was looking into someone's home, in the 911 call at least.

It's a gated community. That can count as an enclosure. 876.13 counts for public property, if you want to go that route.

Weren't you done with this conversation anyways?

Using that reasoning (one example counterbalances all policy discussion), we should have taken guns away from cops after Amadou Diallo and nightsticks away from cops after Rodney King and pepper spray away from cops after UC Davis.

According to a recent CDC study (ordered by President Obama, not a particularly firearms-friendly politician), firearms owned by private civilians in the USA are used far more often to stop crimes than to commit them.

Making policy based off one controversial case instead of based on well-structured studies like the CDC study is a bad idea.

well i thought i was trying some reconciliation and apologized for my rhetoric. and try to explain where i'm coming from, in a non caps-lock way. which is why i asked the questions i did.

should we not discuss any longer?

No...using my reasoning after those events you discuss the matter, look at the why's and the wherefore's, make policy changes, maybe equipment changes, training protocols, patrol structure or any number of initiatives.
You don't just accept the status quo and leave it at that.



Yes but how many of those private citizens are actively going out looking for crime to prevent while armed?
Or is it more a case that a gun is brandished during an unexpected crime, or fired during a burglary or attempted mugging?

Preventing a crime happening to you or your property is different to a neighbourhood watch guy actively going out and attempting to stop and confront people he deems suspicious. Without adequate training, back up, support or experience.

I'll maybe have to tackle someone burgling my house in the night (and have tackled someone vandalising a neighbours) but I'd be ill equipped to start patrolling the streets looking for ne' do wells.

I think that's a bit harsh mate. I have heard gay people saying 'butthurt'.

It never come across to me as homophobic, just another piece of slang.
