downgrade

I know that the latest jailbreak right now is for 4.0.1, but in theory, when a jailbreak comes out for 4.2, will I be able to downgrade AFTER jailbreaking without having saved my SHSH files before 4.2? I am an A+ certified IT tech, so please spare me the smartass bull.
