I used a DVD-R (4.7GB) on my computer and it actually didnt hold 4.7GB per disc, WHY?

If DVD+RW holds more capacity than DVD-RW why do they both say 4.7GB storage capacity per disc and on their packaging?

So i bought music videos from itunes and tv shows. If i buy blank dvd-r cds can i burn them to the dvd-r cds and watch them on a dvd player if not how can i do it????
