Like normally when you trade you gotta trade something back to the other person, as where migrating there were two game slots how does trading work when you cant trade generation 5 to 4

It says it treats your DS and game cartridge as one in the same. Can I reset this after getting a new DS and retiring my current one? If so, would this effect my Friend Code?
