'03 GMC Envoy XL Trunk Problem?

I tried opening the trunk today and it would only open about halfway. My father and I had to keep pushing down on the top and lifting up slowly but it still won't stay down. It's about a good inch or two apart and after we closed it, it only opened about a 1/4th aways up. Any ideas how to fix this?

disconnect the liftgate struts and check range of motion. If normal, replace struts. They have a tendency to freeze up when they get wet limiting their range of motion.
