1984 Honda Shadow Bogging out?

My cousin just purchased a 1984 Honda Shadow VT700 and the only problem it has is that when you drive it and give it gas it starts to bog out. You can have it on and in neutral and rev it up just fine, but once you put it in gear and give it a decent amount of gas, it bogs out and will die if you don't let up. What are some possible problems?

Dirt air cleaner - clean it, replace if necessary
Restricted air box intake - check for blockage.
Tight or leaking valves - adjust the valves.
Water in the gas - drain the carburetor float bowls.
Carburetor slides sticking - clean the carbs and check the throttle slide diaphragms for cracks or tears.
