1989 BMW 525 for a new driver?

My dad found a BMW for sale behind a garage and bought it as my first car for only $500, the guy couldn't open the car to get in or use it so he didn't want it (my dad was able to open it at home though). It works and the interior and exterior is in great condition. The only thing is that it has 225,000 miles. How well do these cars run? Safety and reliability?
