i am looking into purchasing a 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL but it has 165,000 original miles on it. It is going for $2495, is in rather amazing condition. But here is where I worry.

What are known problems of the 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL?
What are problems that could come out of the blue for an RX-7 of that year and model with that many miles on it?
The owner took good care of the vehicle and never beat it up while driving it, but still at 165000 miles on the engine what should i expect?
Should I expect it to continue running for years yet (I do not do a LOT of traveling, currently the only guarantee on driving is 4 miles to and from college 5 days a week. Other travels are spontaneous with my friends, lol. But furthest I would go is Miami (from Orlando) and that would only be on weekends of course).
Ashwin Rath: thanks man! ill make sure to do those tests on it first thing.

Well it's 20 years old, so who knows really. If in doubt, always have it inspected by a mechanic before purchasing. If it was very well maintained then you should be in good shape, although you should never be surprised if something goes wrong on a car of that age.

Hi.

I would suggest a few simple tests.

1)Take the car up to a straight road , leave the steering wheel so that its absolutely straight and step on the gas... if the car moves perfectly along a straight line, its pretty good and has not taken any serious beating... if it moves to the left or right it means the chassis is deformed... this is a BAD sign

2)No the Mazda never had any issues but i would suggest that you take check the oil in the engine and the condition of the cylinder piston rings (ask a mechanic to do this, it should cost a max of a 100 bux). If its cool.... go for it

Good luck.
