1996 BMW 328IC Timing belt or timing chain?

Hello,

I recently purchased a 1996 BMW 328 IC, it has 87000 miles on it. I was wondering if the car has a Timing belt or a Timing chain?

And if it has a timing belt how can I find out if it was previously changed or not?
 
It should have a timing belt and go to carfax.com other than that if your not sure and you think it should be replaced then have it done anyway. If that is a zero clearance engine and you loose your timing belt you will have to replace the whole engine. Its cheaper in the long run to have the timing belt replaced.
 
go to auto parts store and buy a Chilton's auto repair manual $20.00 it will tell you when to change the timing belt or chain what ever it is and also how to inspect them to know when to replace them
