1999 Ford Contour SE Dies on me while driving.?

I changed the battery and that lasted about 3 weeks. I get the impression it may be the alternator or the distributor but that is just a wild guess. I will be driving the car and it just dies on me. It is as if the batter is disconnected, the speedometer, radio, AC, all the power features in the car will stop working, the car will start lunging and then it will die on me altogether. Any ideas or suggestions?
How do I check if my battery is arching? And if it is the alternator how do I replace it?
