It used to only happen when we just started the car cold, 1 out of 5 times. Now it happens multiple times during a single trip. The overheat warning light blinks multiple times and the car beeps three loud times. It has nothing to do with the temperature of the engine best I can tell because it will happen when the car has just started one subfreezing morning, or while it's running warm. It had overheated many months ago for a very short period of time, so I guess it could be the thermostat sensor having been fried, but I wanted another opinion before I replace it myself. I found a $20 one on Amazon, but even that's a large investment for me right now. Any other ideas what it might be? Coolant levels seem to be steady, the car isn't over heating, and the beeping is VERY annoying.
No codes are being thrown by the engine. I checked it with my scan tool... the car has around 90,000 miles on it.
The temperature gauge is accurate to the same temperature read by the computer via the scan tool. Could the sensor still be the problem?
