2008 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro vs 2008 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD?

We are looking to buy a car for our 16 year old son. He not an average teenager; he
plays varsity sports, makes good grade, and for some reason he always aires on the side of caution. We were comparing these two car they are both under $17k and under 29k miles. Are their any major difference between these ie: safety, reliability, maintence, or technology? (insurane not too much of an issue) Any and all thoughtful and truthful answers are greatly appreciated! Also we live 30min away from his school so mpg is also impotant.

Audi is a great car.
Safety is just the same,like maitence and technology,
S60 is most expensive in term of fuel consumption and (in my opinion) ugly.

Anyway,all european cars are good
