I have an 80's road bike with a Sakae Crank and a front and rear Suntour derailleur. The bike was a 6 or 7 speed I think. I'm using friction shifters.

My question is...
I want to upgrade to a shimano Ultegra 6500 9 speed cassette or a Shimano 105 10 speed cassette

Do I also have to change the crank to be compatible with the cassette?
If I can use the same crank can I also use the same front derailleur?

Where I live, I had my PEUGEOT road bike upgraded from 6-speed cassette to 9-speed Shimano 105 cassette and chain (original chain too wide to sit on cog-set), and cycling happily

However, if you insist on 10-speed Shimano cassette, you need to replace the free-hub as well, according to Shimano

Nothing to do with the crankset/front derailleur
