A good starter Album for a Metallica newbie?

Someone suggested me to Metallica, given my music interests. (AC/DC, Zeppelin, Motorhead, Hendrix.) Anyone have a good suggestion for a few good starter albums? I've heard a few Metallica songs before (For Whom The Bell Tolls, Trapped under Ice, Sad but True, etc.) But I'm looking for a bit more direction.

Also, why the hate for St. Anger? I've never heard the album, but many Metallica fans seem to hate it.

NO!! Don't start with the black album! That's like watching the end of a movie before watching the movie from the beginning! Start with their first album KILL EM ALL! It can get any more basic than that! Its thrasy and I love it! Enjoy listening to it!
