Sci-Fi is often confused with fantasy fiction or science-fantasy. The defining quality of Sci-Fi is the question of how a new technology effects the relationships among people. The example is "Brave New World," in which the technology is the custom design and production of people to their future roles in life; the effect is a stagnant and structured society with no room for innovation.

If a writer in 1890 had seen a new automobile and decided to write it into his story he could have gone in different directions. One writer might write a conventional western in which the characters rode cars instead of horses; that would be another cowboy story. Another writer might have envisioned suburbs, and urban sprawl; that would have been science fiction.
