Murder is a subjective social definition of killing.

It is a legal definition, so no matter how much the pro-lifers want legal abortion to be defined as murder, it cannot be without the law changing.
 
I disagree that its purely philosophical. You can't kill something that isn't alive and the discussion on whether a foetus is alive or not is a legit one. I'm trying to remember all the bits to that MRS GREN thing they teach in schools to show how plants and animals are both living things. I'm not sure a foetus even matches up to that very basic yardstick.

That said, I'm fine with saying its killing humans if it puts everyone on the same page to carry on the debate without getting hung up on terminology semantics. Not that it matters because even with that I differ with others on whether that's inherently a bad thing or not.

Not that it matters because using that definition I'm not sure anything counts as living until puberty seeing as reproduction is up there. This is one of those sucky subjects that no one will ever agree on.

Which is something else I don't get. I know a couple people on MAP who I have on facebook who are part of very aggressive pro choice groups. Basically don't do anything, just popst extreme examples of pro lifers comments then have a circle jerk ripping into them, but I don't get why the pro choice "movement" as it were is such a big thing. Abortion's legal. They've won. Unless there starts becoming a serious challenge to it (so in the States I understand the need for a vocal pro choice group) I don't quite get why people are spending their free time getting in a tizzy over pro lifers.
 
I don't have a dog in this fight and really don't have any strong opinions one way or another. I just enjoy reading other people's points of view.

At one end you have that as soon as conception occurs a potential human life is formed.
This is true.

At the other end you have that a fetus is essentially a parasite feeding on a host and has the potential to do the host harm and even kill it through medical complications or the birth process itself.
This is true as well.

I have no idea what the correct medical, scientific or moral answers are to any of this.
 
Sure, we can't clearly define "life".

But we all started out as sperm and egg, so I think the "potential life" argument is undeniable.
 
So, based on that some people could conclude that masturbation or the use of birth control could be considered a crime?

I think we will have figured out warp drive and inhabited other planets before we figure this out.
 
I agree with M1k3jobs on where that slippery slope goes. I would add, just because I'm bored and it's something new to add in, why does it matter if its potential life? Why does that make it something worth protecting?
 
Yup, they're called Catholics.

I think part of the problem is thinking of animals as discrete entities, whereas we are actually vast colonies of cells. Not all of them originating from within the system either - such as some bacteria necessary for our survival.
 
Just wanted to clarify that I'm not against abortion or think it's "bad" or "wrong". Earlier in the thread I did state I was pro choice. Just saying it wouldn't be my personal choice (abortion). Purely for the way I personally feel, nothing more.

If someone thinks it is worth protecting, that is personal and subjective. It gets more difficult when you think the creator of the universe says it is so.

Personally, I think it would be wise to sort out things like starvation and war first, if we're talking about the sanctity of human life.
 
I think comparing embryos to cancer and parasites gets us nowhere.
It certainly makes me switch off to whatever the person doing it is saying. It's Godwinning for the abortion debate.
I find it more unhelpful than thinking all life is sacred.
At least the pro-life people that take into consideration the actual life-form in question are trying to be positive and actually reflect how people feel about pregnancy and childbirth to some degree.
 
There's no objective or absolute answer. It's all about how you feel. You can't tell another potential mother or father if their unborn child is worth protecting or not. In the same way I can't tell you what value to place on your potential offspring.

As someone with a medical background, its actually amazing how many 'normal' pregnancies go full term. Not that we have some abnormal folks running around here on MAP of course
 
I also believe it is wrong except in cases of rape, incest, or if it is a danger to the mother. If the woman didn't have a choice to have sex to get pregnant at that point she shouldn't have to be responsible if she doesn't want to. That's not to say that good cannot come from that child, but the woman just may never forget about it.

In this town I live in there is a girl who is under 20 (I don't recall her exact age) but she is now pregnant for the 6th time. She has had 3 miscarriages and 2 of the kids were taken from her. This is why abortion is wrong. It's not a method of birth control for people who are to stupid and irresponsible to put a condom on, use birth control or something else. If you are responsible enough to take the risk, then man or woman up and take the responsibility for the child you helped produce and stop crying about it. At the very least, have the child and give it up for adoption. There are people out there would do anything to be able to have a child.
 
I don't care about what everyone's opinion is here i didn't even bother to read all the posts, my ex and myself planed to have a baby she decided against it and had an abortion behind my back, that was a long time ago and i still think about it with some sadness i would have taken the baby and cared for it by myself, im not judging anyone im just conveying how that experience has affected me for the rest of my life.
 
So you think a woman shouldn't be allowed to do what she wants with her body? It's just something to think about man (:



I also agree, I think there should always be a contraception there. I want to get the RISUG method but it's not yet available in this country
