Did alexander Ovechkin play in the NHL the same year that he got drafted?

No cause of the lockout but the following year after that when Crosby and Ovechkin were both rookie's; Ovechkin beat Crosby and took "Rookie of the Year".

He was drafted in 2004, but because of the lockout his first year was the 05-06 season
