alt+number doesn't work?

you know that you can pres alt+# and get those weird symbols, i can't. i am on my laptop. i've tried the alt+# and i've tried fn+alt+# and when i try the former, then i only get the key options of F1-F12. is there some place i have to be on the iternet to get it to work? i've tried it on open office (like microsoft word, different people) and it doesn't work. can someone explain this to me??;( i don't think it works on this either. :((( let me try, just to make shure. ? <that is my test.
OMG! IT WORKED ON HERE! why on here, and not on open office???? are there other places i can do this??

(no spaces) and when i tried the alt+# it stil didn't work!
@ steve: what number pad? i have 1-0 with symbols over them thats the only numbers i have.
 
You could type special symbols (ASCII code symbols) using the <ALT> key + a number code using the numeric keypad.
Laptops/notebooks/netbooks have a HIDDEN NUMERIC KEYPAD, check these keys:
7-8-9-0 u-i-o-p j-k-l-; m-<->-? you could see a small blue or other color number/numeric operator on them, well this is your numeric keypad.

HOW TO ENABLE THE HIDDEN NUMERIC KEYPAD.

METHOD 1: Using the FN key (function key)
To switch the keys to numeric keypad press and hold the FUNCTION KEY (the FN key located at the bottom-left side of the keyboard) and type using the hidden numeric keypad.
TYPE: I love milk
Press and hold the FN key and type: I love milk, you will get 5 36ve 0532 instead, because you are using the numeric pad

METHOD 2: Using the hidden NUMERIC LOCK
Look on the Fn keys (top row of keys) or on your keyboard keys for a padlock symbol or the words NumLock, or NumLk, or Num or other symbol (check your computer manual).
TYPE: I love milk
Now enable the NUMERIC LOCK
• To enable the NUMERIC LOCK
If the NUMERIC LOCK symbol or word is shown in a different color, find the matching-color key, such as <ALT> or <FN> and press and hold that key and press the NUMERIC LOCK key.
If nothing happens, try SHIFT + NUMERIC LOCK key.
Now, the keyboard has switched into numeric keypad mode.
TYPE: I love milk you will get 5 36ve 0532
• To disable the NUMERIC LOCK
Press the NUMERIC LOCK key combination that you use to turn it on.

TYPING SPECIAL SYMBOLS:
• Enable the NUMERIC LOCK or hold the FN (Function key)
• Press and hold the <ALT> key and type the number combination using the hidden numeric keypad.

As you are using a laptop, which has no separate number pad, you need to use the set of keys in the middle of the keyboard with numbers over them. For example, you will probably find that M has a 0 above it, J, K and L have the numbers 1, 2, and 3 respectively, U, I, O and P have 4, 5, 6 and 7, etc.

You mentioned your FN key -- you probably have to press FN + the Num Lock key in order to activate your number pad. Then press Alt+3 for, e.g. the symbol.

try using the number pad. if you use the numbers above the letters that won't work.
