am i the only person who doesnt believe in god but considers athiesm a religion?

i don't get it from my personal definition of religion not some dictionary athiesm falls under that catergory. i do not believe in god but i do not consider myself athiest do to the fact that i do not accept any religion. It doesnt particurlarly bother me if people think i am athiest i will kindly tell them i am not but if they continue to believe that way i don't really care because i don't care what people think of me still it seems people get super worked up about it i don't see the point. i am tired of people trying to say i am wrong because i percieve religion diffeently. it seems whenever i look up anyhing on it(i don't personally care but decided to research since i recently was engaged in conversation by someone about the topic) well all i can ever find is christain websites or athiest websites. they are extremely biased in my opinion and they didnt change my opinion. More impotantly the peson i am arguing with won't accept that our opinions are different. now i may understand a little more if they themselves were athiest but they're not they are christian and i don't see why they care so much. i mean really whys it such a big deal to them? i feel like they are just i'm right and you're wrong. not to put christians down bcaus they're are plenty of good ones but my experiance with them has always pretty much been like that....

please no hating on me or getting on my back. i am not here to be told i am stupid and i respect other peoples beliefs
if you feel inclined tell me your OPINION but don't bother telling me i am wrong because that means nothing to me and frankly i find it rude
 
To have a religion you need some kind of supernatural creature to have faith in.

Faith is the belief in the untrue.

To be without faith in Santa/Krishna/The Flying Spaghetti Monster is a philosophy.
 
You are clearly uneducated. You are an atheist, you are not a fundamental atheist.
 
Since you asked, in the nicest way possible I will tell you, Atheism can't be a religion. Look at every single religion in the world. they all require faith, prayer, structure, worship etc. Atheism lacks all of that. It can't be religion, for it is the absence of belief in the main subject of all religions: a god.
 
Well, if you choose to make up your own definitions for words, then good for you. I could choose to define "eggplant" as "someone who makes up a definition for 'religion' that includes atheism".

I don't see what exactly the purpose in you making up alternative definitions for words is, though. We already *have* a perfectly good language, and in English, atheism isn't a religion, and you, being someone who doesn't believe in God, are an atheist.

And since you apparently seem to *want* to speak to the rest of us using English as a medium, I suggest you abide by the definitions of English words, my eggplant friend.


Addendum: In case you're interested in the *actual* definitions, and not your "personal definitions", here they are:

Religion: a faith-based belief system regarding the supernatural

Atheism: Either a lack of belief in gods (weak atheism) or the belief that gods do not exist (strong atheism)

You'll notice that, if you'd like to join the rest of us in speaking English, atheism is not a religion, and you are an atheist.

You care to provide an example?

Christian: someone who believes in the god of Abraham, who believes that Jesus was the son of God, and accepts Jesus as their saviour to gain salvation and atone for their sins.

If someone fits that description, they're a Christian. If they don't, they're not. It isn't that complicated.
 
What I understand of you is that you are searching for truth. Atheism is religious in that it denounces that there is any existing force behind the world. If you are searching, or a have questions about whether there is or is not a god, than you would not be Atheist. It would be like a person saying they are Christian but not believing the Christ is God.

A book that I enjoyed reading was C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. He talks about many different religions in it, in, what seems to be, a non-biased view. You should give it a read instead of looking at those websites.

I would also suggest attending different churches or meetings of peoples of different faiths. Perhaps go to a Catholic Mass or to a Mosque. If you are really feeling ambitious, you can start to read the Bible or the Quran. If you do though, read the Bible like you would a story, because it is the narrative of God's nature.
 
No. Other ignorant people do too. If you don't believe any gods exist, then you're an atheist whether or not you like the word.

There are atheists that are religious, although most of them aren't. Atheism isn't a religion. It turns out that in language, you can't just make up your own definitions for words that are contrary to what those words actually mean. If you don't want people to think you're stupid, then don't insist on using words to mean something other than they mean.

Or am I afraid of what a careful investigation might reveal?'

Let me ask you this: What would you consider the key criteria of a religion, and how does atheism fulfill each one?

I've posted my response to this question before. I'll see if I can dig it up again. From the most detailed definition I could find for 'religion', atheism fit none of the key criteria.
 
Nope...as whatever your "meta theory" is , can also be considered your "religion". Alcoholism can be considered a religion for example......its all in what you hold as the highest "theory" you live by.
 
yeah i agree with you. most christian site try to Label atheist bad people. while atheist site only say half trues and a lot of lies.
 
But but but you are wrong. You just are. That's like saying I am a dog when in fact I am a human. It's a fact, it's not an OPINION.
Atheism is not a religion. I'm sorry, you're just wrong. Religion does have a definition, and atheism doesn't fall under that definition.
