American History Fiction?

I am looking for an American fiction book, obviously, and I'm thinking I want one that's about pilgrims and their myths and legends and stuff or one about the Salem Witch Trials would be a neat read or one about mental institutions would be good, too. Thank you very much(:
 
Salem Witch Trials: Elizabeth George Speare's 'The Witch of Blackbird Pond.' You should also read Miller's play 'The Crucible,' although it's somewhere between historical fiction and fact.

Mental institutions: Ken Kesey's 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' Also watch the film; it's classic.
