Android root not working?

I've tried Z4 Root and Recovery Flasher on MyTouch 3G. Both aren't working. Am I doing something wrong?; I downloaded the files on to the SD card (including a rom), installed them with Astro File Manager. Z4 Root just closes, and Super User (correct?) is not there afterward. Do I have to downgrade? I'm on 2.2.1. Suggestions on how to fix? Thanks.
 
I don't know about the MyTouch 3G specifically, but I did root my Droid. In the process I learned that there are many different root methods, even sometimes for one specific phone, and nearly all of them either only work on a specific phone model, or only work on some phones but not all phones.

Therefore I recommend searching around to find a page that describes, step-by-step, how to root *your* specific phone (MyTouch 3G with 2.2.1).
