...Astra? There seems to a loud whining sound coming from the rear wheel area (and it is not the wife). It comes and goes but remained there tonight. Strangely the noise stops when I apply the brakes. I am planning to take to a garage but just wondered if anyone had any thought or opinions? Thank you all in advance

Hi there most likely wheel bearing.jack up the wheel and spin it you will hear it if it is wheel bearing also put one hand top of tyre ans other bottom of tyre.push one pull the other one back and forth if you have movement then definitely wheel bearing. Jock abbasrest.org

It sounds like one out of two possibilities, 1. could be sticking break shoes or a warped wheel drum, 2. a wheel bearing that's on it`s way out, both are not really big jobs, could be done by someone who knows something about cars. Needs to be rectified as soon as is possible/

If it stops when you brake, then it's something to do with the brakes, but you won't know till you take it to a garage. (don't go to KwikFit, find a proper garage)

Is the whine speed sensitive, does it change pitch with the speed? It could be the tires or wheel bearing. If it's the tires, your alignment might be out of whack. If it's the wheel bearing, that needs to be replaced.

It stopping when brakes are applied gave me the answer. You need brakes. See, when the pads get thin a little finger of metal comes up from the pad and runs on the disk to give you the warning. Off to the brake shop!
