Anyone remember a sci fi book with the word memories in the title?

He said that it involves prisoners that are serving for life, and that they can offer themselves up for "experiments." The main character does this and is injected. This injection allows him to travel though time and space? I think and he is also able to be male or female... His memory isn't what it used to be, but that's pretty much the description he gave to me.
