Are people still entertained by rappers making up lyrics off the top of their head?

I never understood the draw of these free style rap competitions. Very repetitive usually sounds disappointing and more often than not, the "song" is all about how great the rapper thinks he/she is.. Can you imagine trying to do this with rock music? People would quickly realize that it's silly!
