Are VW beetles bad cars to buy ?

I wanted to buy a VW 2002 used beetle but I keep hearing all these horror stories about trnasmission and the windows breaking and a whole lot of other stuff just wanted to know if it was true

All foreign cars are bad to buy. Stick with Ford, GM, or Chrysler. BUY AMERICAN!
 
Why would people lie about that? I would assume its true. Besides that, they're hella ugly. You could do a lot better for the money.
