I want as many responses as i can get... i want each side's story... defend your belief.
first off f*** you people... this is a debate.... now give me more thourough answers... your making yourselves out to look like your the smartest people with down syndrome now give the people reading this... some good answeres.... or are you too god damn scared to stand up and speak your mind.

I am an atheist because religion has done me wrong aside from not believing in it. Being told that I'm going to burn in Hell for begin a lesbian by own grandmother and some of my closest friends has had a huge effect on me. If it wasn't for that then I probably wouldn't have as much hatred toward this subject that I do. I'd just be a quiet atheist who ignores ignorance.

God does not exist. There is no proof and while science still has many theories as to how this whole universe thing works, I am a hell of a lot more inclined to go with them because they can EXPLAIN themselves, not just 'because God said so'.

But I am open to the belief that he or some other god might exist. If that is the truth then oh well as much as I doubt that. If God is like the Bible says then even if he came to me and told me to worship him then I wouldn't. That would be condoning all of the horrible horrible atrocities of the Bible including sending to Hell every homosexual being ever (including myself).

I am an atheist because I refuse to be another sheep herded through life and mindlessly worshiping a God that clearly gets a kick out of watching people suffer just because they aren't like him.

well i think religion is just some excuses for somethings that science cant explain (SOME OF THEM) and its mixed with a lot of other man made fairy tales...

No objective evidence for any religion, the universe can be explained through natural causes, we win.

A forum like this isn't the best to host a debate.

Though would like to add this to all the religious folk:

God in each religion has a very keen interest in us believing in him. It is, for whatever reason, important for him that we believe in him, important enough that he damns us for not doing so.

I, on the other hand, have no reason to need to believe in such a being. I used to be Christian, and my life became exponentially better once I stopped living my life on someone else's terms. If "God" wants me to believe in him, the burden is on him to prove his existence, not on me to ignore my own reasoning.

there is as much evidence for god as there are fairies and unicorns, which is none. you don't believe in the latter, so why believe in the first?

I'm Atheist.
I do see the good parts of religion, and I'm not against good morals and beliefs on a good way of life. But I am against ignorance. I don't like it that most of the world believes in something that they don't even know exists. I don't like it that people see the word "faith" as some sort of strength. I don't like it that most world wars and conflicts are influenced by religion. I don't like that science and research isn't at its full potential due to religious people being against it. I don't like that world leaders and governments are influenced by religion. I don't like the segregation due to religion. I can't bare to see people fear and love something so much that isn't even proved to exist. Religion is a gamble and handicapping the only life that I've got isn't something I'm willing to gamble.

If religious people took a break from their controlling thoughts and just considered the good in being free from religion, and felt the goodness in being completely independent... they'd understand.

"ignorance is bliss"

"If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed." - Albert Einstein

That's a very broad and unfocused request that would take multiple tomes to fully answer for both sides.

But a belief I am willing and easily able to defend is my belief that we should all start re-introducing the word 'tome' into daily jargon. It's a good word and I feel we're losing it.

I believe there is no proof that god exists, other than religious texts. It comes down to faith. I have no faith, therefore i choose no to believe in god or follow a religion dedicated to someone/thing i do not believe in.

science cant explain what happens after death....

religion gives god a bad name....

and yet both sides have way to many people who think they know it all

personally I think its ignorance on both sides

I like swedish girls because there blonde and I like thai food plus I rather get paid to sleep and not get up and go to work. What does magic man have anything to do with this?

God will always defend me.. but since I haven't been attacked just now I have no need to defend. God bless you.

to the gray guy: unless your Pagan. We don't evangelize, nor do we have absolutist beliefs.. imagination and intuition are accepted. Even the most influential and authoritative pagans will not say they know that they know. It is part of being in a religion that realizes the value of a direct connection with the divine without having to rely on a mediator such as some guru, prophet, or messenger.. this is also the definition of mysticism.

The after death part, to me, is a reassurance of life because it is how the natural world works. Why would it not be any different for us. We regenerate the same kind of energy we expended while alive when dead. Beautiful.

God is not a Religion, just go outside and look around, he created everything, then look in the mirror and ask yourself if you look like an ape,or a reptile. The proof is in the pudding.

Considering that millions of people ascribe to religious which are fundamentally atheistic (e.g. many Buddhists), you may want to restate your question.

Perhaps you meant to say:
"Atheist vs. theist: The Big Debate?"

Indeed, some religious studies textbooks have divided their chapters in an outline contrasting theistic religions with atheistic religions. Religion and belief in God/gods are not the same thing. (Time to find Mr. Venn again and borrow his diagrams.)
