Best Food for 1yr Old Malnourished Boxer?

My Husband and I are adopting a 1 year old Boxer from the pound. We pick her up this Friday.

Unfortunately she is extremely malnourished. Her bones are showing and it breaks my heart. I don't understand how anyone could neglect a pet like so. Besides her being extremely skinny, everything else is good!

What would be the best food to feed her to get her back to the best health. Also, do any of you have any tricks to help gain her weight back.

I would think that the pounds Dr would give you strict instructions on the proper care and feed of your new boxer. If not, you need to take him straight to your vet, and have them set up a schedule. You have to be careful, because it's human nature to overfeed him to make up for that lack of food he has not received, which can cause a lot of problems also. Check out this web site and I hope it will help. http://www.thepetcenter.com/imtop/recovery.html

quite shocking that your shelter would release such an animal.

I'd say feed high quality working food for dogs that actually compete in sports and stuff....just till she gets at weight. They are typically pricey but Canadae is on that list...only about $30 a bag.

You can ask your vet if they carry Science Diet a/d Prescription Food. It's a high calorie canned food specifically designed for sick/malnourished pets or pets recovering from major surgery. I bought a case for my pit bull when I adopted her. She had just been treated for a heavy case of heartworms, intestinal worms, AND she had to have a pregnant spay (doggy abortion) on top of all that. I love the stuff. She didn't even have to finish the whole case before she was back up to snuff.
If you're not able to do that, you can feed her a high quality puppy food (Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc). It's high in calories and full of nutrients.

Good luck with your new baby!
