I noticed that in my neighborhood (it's a little bit run down and in need of some upgrdes) some people have large, mesh like sattelite dishes that take up half their yard. Not like the small ones from dish network or DirecTV, but a lot of people have these old sattelite dishes and I was wondering, do they still, work, can you still get them, and if so, what kind of programming do you get on these?

Yes there still it stuff to receive with them, either for subscription or Free-To-Air.

The subscription is a limited set of the normal cable channels that the provider could get permission to sell to home viewers. The receiver used for subscription is basically turn of the century technology.

Free-To-Air is network feeds, wild feeds, backhauls, and religius/foreign/shopping channels. There is NASA TV.

Yes you can still get them. For a home hobbyist, it is cheaper to get a used dish nobody wants anymore.
You likely need to buy at least a DVB-FTA receiver, if not a 4DTV receiver (to get subscription DCII channels).

The are called C-band dishes and yes they still work. Most cable system get their cable network programming from satellites that use these dishes. There are STILL companies that do supply programming to individuals who have these dishes.

>>Are most home ones still in use? >> NO it is so much easier to point one DirecTV or Dish network 18 inch satellite dish at ONE satellite and get all your programming rather than having to move the dish to a different satellite to get the channel you want.

C-Band dishes are NOT as subject to rain fade or other interference and the quality of the signal is better than with the smaller dishes that is the reason cable systems still use them.

Yes and it all depends on which satellite to use it on.
