I want to switch off my computer but the download is still going on. Although I am aware of the 'Shut down when downloads complete' feature, I don't want to use it. I was wondering that if I just pause the download and switch my computer off and when I switch it on again can I resume the download?

Yep.

A torrent is not a regular download in the sense that it downloads the whole file in one go. Instead, you get little chunks of the file from everybody who is downloading that torrent.
Once you pause and later resume it, your torrent program will check which chunks it already got, and continue downloading the missing parts.

Be aware though that seeds might disconnect in the mean time. If no-one has the complete file (because all seeds have disconnected) when you resume the download, you will never be able to complete the torrent until some seeds reconnect. Also, less seeds means more bandwidth that you have to share with your peers, thus lower download speeds.
