I am thinking of renewing this machine and want to know if Blue Ray would be the way to go but having about 200 DVDs dont want to get something that wont play these DVDs.
Being an old fogey I would like to ask you all - Can you play the ordinary DVDs that are on sale at present on a Blue Ray machine? The machine I have at present is a Digital DVD/Home Cinema and cost about £800 some five years ago.
Um - I am in England I don't know what made you think I was USA. I need more information than that given so far.

You can get a Blu-ray player for about $100 US here in America now. That figures out to be about 75 "quid" on your side of the "pond". I'm pretty sure that Blu-ray players can play DVDs because DVD standards are lower than Blu-ray standards. The tech specs for Blu-ray are: 1080p @ 60 frames per second, audio sampled at 192 KHz. For DVD the audio is sampled at 96 KHz - it isn't as good. If a Blu-ray player is only about "75 quid" for you it might be worth it to get one and just keep your present DVD player as a backup. For some videos having Blu-ray would be silly anyway, like ones of old TV broadcasts - the video quality just isn't there (unless it was originally shot on film).

theyre are systems that play both that are around £100 in the uk (dunno what itd be in america )
