Burn video + subtitles on dvd FREE?

Looking for free software that burns any or (most) video file(s) on DVD with possibility to add subtitle(s). Output should be a video DVD playable in conventional DVD players. Have tried several solutions (Nero 7, Image Burner, etc.) that all suck and search results are confusing. There should be something out there that's both efficient and free.
