Burning DVD's VS External Hard drive for Wii ISO's?

PLOX, can anyone tell me the cons for having an external hard drive play Wii ISO's. i Play burned DVDs on the wii alot.. but it takes up space. scratches. and constant need to burn slowly is annoying. Wanting to switch but. dont want to be screwed by buying an expensive hard drive when it has bad cons too...thanks in advance. will appreciate any info on external hard drives. :)
