Can a hernia on one side cause a hernia on the other side?

I had an inguinal hernia on my left side from a fall. A few years later, I got one on the other side, probably from heavy lifting. The right one has come back 3 times and now I have nerve damage in my groin from scar tissue from the surgeries. It it possible/probable that my right hernia was caused by or a result of my left hernia? thanks
