Can a home audio pre-amp output be hooked to a car audio pre-amp input

amplifier that's powering car subs? I understand all the other stuff that is involved to complete this setup, like a 12v DC converter for the car amplifier. Would this cause a problem or is this possible.

I am trying to take a home audio surround sound receiver and make my own powered subwoofer. i am experienced with both home audio and car audio and i know that 4ohm car amplifier cannot go with 8ohm house speakers of vice versa, but what I am asking if having an 8ohm receiver hooked up to a seperate 4ohm car amplifier and 4ohm car speaker by means of a low level preamp output from the receiver to the car amp cause a problem?
This question is for someone who is actually experienced in ohms law and not just someone who thinks they know what they are talking about because they know that 4ohm car audio does not go with 8ohm house audio.
The receiver is for 8ohm speakers

The amplifier is 500w x 1 @ 4ohm and 1000w x 1 @ 1ohm. The speakers are 2ohms each but I will be wiring them in parallel so they are 1 ohm.

I had it hooked up in my car like this and all was well, very loud, i just finished hooking it up in my house and it sounds good, but tiny high pitch whistling noise and when I turn it all the way up it makes wacky noise and bass stops. Any ideas?

you can do this... you add ohms up because ohms are resistance to electricity flow... depends if you have a parallel or series circuit. this would have an output of approximately 8ohms so the 8ohm reciever is perfect for this. i am an electronical technician for the navy. i know ohms law like none other. i need to see the schematic to tell you exactly. i've seen tom's answers and he's just a novice in the car audio area.

Actually you 4 ohm car amp CAN easily drive an 8 ohm speaker. The lower the ohms the more difficult the load is to drive. You can drive a car amp from the low level outputs of a home unit, however you might get a terrible hum due to a ground loop issue. If you really want to do a home sub, try www.partsexpress.com. They sell home sub amps and you can usually catch them on sale pretty regular.
