U.S. by car or RV? Let's assume the gun is stored in a locked box, out of reach of the driver seat (such as in the trunk, or the back of an SUV or RV). I'm not talking about walking around different cities with it concealed, or anything like that.

Perhaps the person wants to bring the gun along just for fun, to shoot target practice at various ranges around the U.S. Or perhaps they want to have it available to them for self-defense, considering they'd be traveling to parts of the country they aren't familiar with and could end up accidentally in high-crime areas. etc etc etc

So, is this legal? Or will some states have gun laws so restrictive that it would be illegal to carry a handgun into their state, even if it's left in the vehicle?

As long as you have the licsences, and if you advise all police border guard etc.. If pulled over. You should be fine by keeping it in your vehicle.
