Can a person legally ride in the back of a Uhaul moving truck in california?

We were looking into renting one for an event in Chico, CA (short 8 mile drive) and putting about 10 people in the back.

Technically, no because it isnt safe, not chairs that are connected to the vehicle safely with seatbelts, the DMV wouldnt approve of you :O

Just dont let the cops know about it... :p
 
It's not legal in any state.

U-Haul has rules that specifically state that no passengers be permitted to ride in the back of a moving van or trailer towable.

Why not rent one of their 8-passenger vans and have a few lap sitters instead?
